Seeing Red

Pepper Rodriguez

Qualico Communities’ announcement of plans for the 95-hectare Redstone community in Calgary’s northeast (south of Stoney Trail, east of Deerfoot, north of Skyview Ranch) had local media types, myself included, scrambling for their pens recently.

So what makes Redstone such interesting news?

Well, for one, it’s a big project, with plans calling for construction of 1,200-1,300 single family homes and up to 2,000 multi-family homes at completion.

Perhaps more interestingly, the grand design features many innovative new ideas. These include a ‘participark’ — described as an active rather than passive green space — with various fitness stations along the way. In fact, all of the green spaces are as functional as they are esthetic in that they all lead somewhere, like schools or commercial areas.

What’s really special about Qualico’s plan for Redstone, however, is the offering of several of what they’ve termed ‘garden lots’. These face onto public green strips rather than onto a street.

Show homes should begin construction later this year and open by summer 2011.
