Legacy Somerset
Condos that come with built-in social life
While the typical condominium offers low-maintenance, secure living, mature buyers sometimes need, or desire, a little more – organized activities, an enhanced sense of community, accessible transportation and wheelchair accessible suites, and extra assurance in case of emergency are some of the items that top their wish list.
Legacy Estates in Somerset, by Pointe of View, presents a wide variety of activities and amenities to its residents. This 60-and-over building features 143 suites, available in studio, one-bedroom or two-bedroom floor plans ranging in size from 389 to 1223 squaare feet. While residents must be over 60, buyers can be any age.
“What draws people to us usually is very obvious,” says Rose Ball, building administrator at Legacy Estates. “Their families have gone, they don’t want the hassle of snow and yard work; a lot also find the advantage of having someone nearby, and a social community.”
Indeed, one of the most attractive features of Legacy Estates in Somerset is the wide range of activities offered to residents. The common amenities within the building include a games room, library, craft rooms, exercise area, commercial dining room and wellness centre, as well as a guest suite. Within these areas, residents can enjoy daily and weekly scheduled events, such as fitness classes, bingo, shuffleboard and darts tournaments, and movie nights, or their own individual pursuits, like card games, jigsaw puzzles, billiards, or surfing the net on one of the two computers in the library. They can also take advantage of hairdressing or aesthetic services, occasional health clinics and the in-house laundry room.
Every month brings a new special event, whether it is a birthday party, Christmas party or other type of celebration, in the dining room. Sometimes these events are catered by the building’s chef, other times they are potluck, but they always feature outside entertainment. The monthly newsletter informs residents of these parties as well as upcoming organized trips, which may include shopping or cultural events.
On a regular day, there is no shortage of activity in the Legacy Estates building. The deli in the lobby is open daily from 10 am to 1 pm and serves hot and cold lunches, and the commercial dining room offers fine dining five nights a week. Meals are completely optional and paid for on a pay-as-you-go basis. When residents aren’t partaking of organized activities, trails leading into the nearby wetlands preserve serve as the perfect backdrop for a scenic walk.
“There’s nobody that gets left alone,” promises Ball. “Unless, of course, they want to be.”
Transportation is available on a regular basis as well, so residents are free to take in shopping or events on their own. The Legacy building is in close proximity to the Somerset-Bridlewood C-Train stop, so no matter what, transportation is always nearby.
Pointe of View offers security and peace of mind to Legacy Estates residents in the form of wall-mounted Health Watch buttons and personal Health Watch necklaces for each resident, in addition to secure, underground parking, a centrally monitored security system, sprinkler systems and air-conditioned common areas.
The building is not all substance and no beauty, however. The interior and exterior design give the feel of a fancy hotel, with rugged stone surrounding the entrance and high ceilings opening up the interior. The dining room, library and common areas are elegantly decorated and comfortable, making you feel instantly at home.
Each suite, whether it is a studio or a one- or two-bedroom, is wheelchair accessible, with a spacious bathroom and kitchen. French doors open onto a private patio or deck. All two-bedroom floor plans at Legacy Estates in Somerset include in-suite laundry.
Residents began moving in to the Legacy Estates building about a year ago, and the building is almost completely sold out, with only two studios still available.
