And the winner is… (Issue 43)
ACAD and Assured Developments announce winner of public art competition
Calgary-based home builder Assured Developments and the Alberta College of Art & Design (ACAD) announced the winning entry of their public art competition at a special unveiling held August 25 at The Galleries Altadore, a new urban town home development in the southwest.
The winners, Christopher Boha and Kari Woo, are both alumni of ACAD, graduating in 2003. Chirstopher with a Bachelor of Fine Arts with a major in glassblowing and Kari with her BFA (with distinction) majoring in jewelry and metals.
Kari and Christopher first started collaborating while in college, finding common interests in aesthetics, design and the combination of materials. The sculpture for The Galleries Altadore (3521 – 15 St. SW) is an adaptation of one of Kari’s jewelry designs.
Designed with a contemporary art gallery theme in mind, both The Galleries Altadore and the nearby The Galleries Marda Loop (2144 – 35 Ave. SW) have an obvious link to Calgary’s arts and culture community. Thus it seemed only natural when Assured Developments approached ACAD with the idea of a unique corporate partnership which would give student artwork valuable exposure in The Galleries developments.
They also helped establish an ACAD student bursary fund and the call for submissions for the installation of the public outdoor artwork for The Galleries Altadore. Another call for submissions will occur for The Galleries Marda Loop as that project nears its conclusion, anticipated for the fall of ’06.
