When you consider the scope of the condominium market in Calgary and the multitude of developers on the industry roster, it’s interesting to note there are few standouts. What distinguishes one from another? The number of years in the industry is one thing, volume of products in the marketplace another. But to arrive at a place of distinction in the industry is more than a numbers game. It’s the development of company standards, before condominiums, that makes a developer as enduring as the product that bears its name.

Sandlewood Developments Ltd. is a progressive company with a long history of building in Calgary. This industry leader’s story begins in 1977 when Sandlewood entered the market as a builder of
primarily single family homes. Setting high standards for design, materials and craftsmanship and choosing only to work with the staff, trades and suppliers that met them was the blueprint for the company’s early success. The following decade was a time of remarkable shifts in the Alberta economy and a time when many homebuilders departed from the industry as quickly as they had arrived. Sustained by a commitment to uphold the high standards the company set in the beginning and through diligent management of resources, Sandlewood Developments flourished.

When, in 1989, partners Jamie Strain and Klaus Meyer recognized a need for affordable condominiums in Calgary, Sandlewood was prepared to meet the demands of the market. Quality remained the focus of the company. To ensure expected standards were met, in 1990, Sandlewood opened its own cabinet and millwork shop to supply materials and craftsmanship for its developments.

As Calgary continued to experience urban growth, the demand for inner-city housing grew with it. In 1996, Sandlewood added condominium conversions to the company portfolio blending new development in the revitalization of inner-city neighbourhoods.

Sandlewood’s unrelenting commitment to quality has paid off. At the 2002 Calgary Region Home Builders Association (CRHBA) SAM Awards of Excellence, the company was awarded top honours in seven categories including  Best Low-rise Apartment (over 50 units) for Copperwood, Best Villa Project for Capilano Heights and Best Townhome Project for Beaumont Hamel. The Multi-Family Builder of the Year and Customer Choice Awards are the highest acclaim from the industry and the market it serves and, for Sandlewood Developments, a pinnacle of achievement.

In a span of over three decades, the company has provided over 500 single-family homes and more than 1400 homes in multi-family developments in Calgary. Sandlewood continues to add to its portfolio with current projects, Copperwood and The Townhomes of Essex Lane, and the recently launched Pontefino for The Bridges.

Bordering the landmark Shaganappi Point Golf Course, highly acclaimed Copperwood offers contemporary elegance in a lifestyle community that while tranquil in its setting is pulsing with energy as development continues with Copperwood II. With an assortment of floor plans and finishes starting at $153,900, Copperwood is designed to meet the needs of condo buyers across the market. Sandlewood’s award-winning sales centre and new show suite is at 24 Hemlock Crescent SW.

The Townhomes of Essex Lane are Sandlewood’s latest contribution to award winning+ Garrison Woods. Distinct architectural styles enhance the Victorian, Colonial and Tudor themes while Sandlewood’s spacious interiors from 2230-2430 square feet are custom designed for the discerning buyer. Show suites are at 56 Scarpe Drive SW.

With development of The Bridges now underway, Sandlewood introduces Pontefino to condo buyers seeking the ultimate urban lifestyle. Encompassing the land that was formerly known as the Calgary General Hospital Site, The Bridges is designed to merge the cultural nuances of historical Bridgeland with contemporary themes in what will be a uniquely defined urban village. Pontefino is two concrete, six-storey buildings featuring lifestyle comforts and modern interior detailing. Pontefino’s marketing centre is open at 644A – 1st Ave NE.
