FIT for Condo Buyers
Anyone who has tripped over the treadmill in their living room while running to answer the cordless phone they left on the breakfast bar will tell you that fitness at home is a cardio experience they can do without.
High priced mega gyms aren’t much of an improvement, especially if the time it takes to go back and forth is longer than your workout. If your time is tighter than your abs, a condo with on-site exercise amenities may be the flexibility you need to strengthen your fitness schedule.
Many developments devote some common area space for shared-use facilities and fitness rooms are among the most popular with condo buyers. There are variations in the space and equipment provided by the condo developer. Some are designated as available space only and equipment is later purchased by the residents. In some cases, the developer provides an allowance to the condo association for the purchase of fitness equipment or other furnishings that are determined by the condo board. Most however are fully equipped by the developer and typically of a quality that is in alignment with the standards set for the development.
Copperwood, by Sandlewood Developments Ltd., is a large scale multi-family community with an entire building devoted to amenities, including a 4500 square-foot exercise facility complete with state-of-the-art fitness equipment and technology. Residents of Copperwood also enjoy a furnished games room, library, movie theatre, service bar for catered functions and comfortable lounge area with access to private two-storey terraces for seasonal entertaining. Lounge and service facilities can be booked for private functions or open for residents to mingle with friends and neighbours at leisure.
The carefree condo lifestyle is the real measure of single-family versus multi-family living. Owning a condominium means enjoying the benefits of personal space at home with the added benefits of shared lifestyle amenities. While an extensive list of amenities is impressive, it’s important to note that as a condo owner, you share both the benefits and costs associated with common use facilities. If you share the expense of equipping the fitness centre at your condo development only to use it about as much as the dust collecting treadmill in your living room, chances are you’re better off with a stash of junk food.
Carla Hackman of Sandlewood Developments says Copperwood residents are thrilled with the on-site facilities and actively involved as a community in their shared use.
“We hosted a wine and cheese social with the condo management company to give new residents a chance to meet their neighbours in a relaxed setting and familiarize themselves with the facilities,” she says. “The invitation was very well received and the feedback we got from residents was a great indication of the value they see in having these types of amenities available. Most of our residents use the fitness room and other facilities on a regular basis.”
Cost effective amenities are generally worth the condo fees needed to support them. Since developers typically provide furnishings and equipment, condo association expenses are limited to operating and maintenance.
Point of View takes amenities a step further with Legacy Estates developments. In addition to fitness facilities, lounge and games rooms, residents enjoy amenities and services that cater to the needs of active adults in the 60+ condo buyers market. Services include an in-residence bistro cafe, formal dining, a convenience store for pick up of last minute items, craft room, shuttle services and an in-house wellness center. A Health Care Coordinator schedules regular visits from medical and paramedical professionals. An events calendar, including scheduled fitness classes, keeps residents informed of what’s happening in their condo community and encourages active participation in the use of facilities. Legacy Estates amenities define lifestyle for active seniors who want to maintain their independence while also having the support of their condo community. The cost of maintaining these services and facilities is well worth it.
If amenities are the determining factor in your choice of condo, it’s to your advantage to use them. So instead of packing up your treadmill and putting on the pounds, pack up your stuff and get in shape at the condo community that’s fit for your lifestyle.
