Putting on the Ritz

Contemporary, established elegance of The Savoy a perfect match for young professional couple’s lifestyle

Built in 1998 by The Pasera Group, The Savoy — one of the newer additions to the well-established community of Connaught — has enhanced the inner city streetscape with its stately brick and stucco exterior, stained glass front doors and copper-topped entranceway.

This prestigious condominium boasts 42 suites throughout five-storeys, with the first and second floors comprised of luxury townhome suites. The upper floors feature spacious bungalow-style apartments that offer views of the quiet, tree-lined street and surrounding neighbourhood.

Back in 2006, one of The Savoy’s executive two-storey townhomes caught the attention of realtor Brian O’Sullivan, prompting he and his wife Brianne to purchase the 1,320-square-foot home, which includes two bedrooms and three bathrooms.

The size and layout of the O’Sullivan’s home is unique to the thriving neighbourhood of Connaught, often referred to as the beltline district. “We enjoy that our home is two storeys and in the heart of downtown,” says Brian.

Living at the The Savoy offers the advantage of being situated close to 17th Avenue, while still just a short walking distance to the downtown core. Green space is abundant in the area, and a diverse range of shops in the Uptown 17 BRZ, including Mount Royal Village and the Devenish building, add to the district’s distinctive look and feel. Emerging as one of the city’s dining meccas, the neighbourhood also showcases award-winning eaterys such as Gnocchi and Cilantro and upscale lounges like The Living Room and Mercury. Pubs like Brewsters and Melrose, offer a comfortable atmosphere to enjoy the game, and are close by too.

Each suite has a private balcony and, for the townhomes, a private brick patio. The heated underground parking stalls for owners are individually titled, and there are underground stalls dedicated for visitors. The building’s security program is ideal for downtown living.

Over time some of the owners have opted to completely renovate their suites, so the floor plans throughout The Savoy vary. The O’Sullivan’s installed African mahogany hardwood floors on the main level and designer carpet on the second level.

The main floor of the O’Sullivan’s home features an expansive living room and dining area, complete with large breakfast bar, guest bathroom, gas fireplace and French doors. The kitchen’s large pantry, maple cabinets and open concept, have proven to be the perfect space for entertaining.

The second floor features nine-foot ceilings, a second guest bathroom and a dedicated laundry room. The luxurious master bedroom has a spacious four-piece bath, generous walk through closets and a large bay window.

At just 27, Brian’s real estate career is thriving in Calgary’s dynamic market. A passion for architecture and assisting his clients in finding the perfect dwelling has made Brian an ideal fit at Re/Max Landan Real Estate, where he works with well-known Calgary realtor Dianne Brown.

Brian is an avid sports fan and athlete who plays golf, basketball, and football. He is both a Flames and Stampeders season ticket holder. “I try to catch all of the games that my schedule permits,” he says. “I also enjoy independent films. And, with the Globe and Uptown cinemas only a ten-minute walk, it is very convenient.”

Although they love their current home, the couple plans to relocate to suburbia in the near future and say they will certainly miss living in the neighbourhood. In fact, they have just listed their condo for sale.

“I would definitely recommend people purchase suites in our building,” says Brian. “The Savoy is in a desirable location, with wonderful neighbours and offers Calgarians a great place to call home.”

O’Sullivan adds that the building is very well run by MCM Management. The condo fees include heat, water, sewer, building maintenance, parking, management fees and amenities, secure bike lock up and a recycling program.
