This month, Jurassic Park comes to the Pengrowth Saddledome in what could be one of the most anticipated events of the year, when the amazing Walking With Dinosaurs — The Arena Spectacular opens in Calgary. Just imagine, life on this world 200 million years ago when dinosaurs ruled the land — but to see it come to life in all its jaw-dropping, animatronic glory is a glorious and rare opportunity.

The show depicts the dinosaurs’ evolution, complete with the climatic and tectonic changes that took place, which led to the demise of many species.  With almost cinematic realism, Walking With Dinosaurs has scenes of the interactions between dinosaurs, and the audience sees how carnivorous dinosaurs evolved to walk on two legs, and how the herbivores fended off their more agile predators.

But the bellow of the majestic, life-size beasts isn’t the only roar out there this month, as we also get to experience the awesome fireworks show during GlobalFest, which only recently signed a five-year partnership with Trico Homes to keep the favourite summertime fest going. There’s also the rollicking Afrikadey celebrations and the fun Marda Gras festival in what is shaping up to be Calgary’s own French Quarter. And let’s not forget the Heritage Day celebrations at Heritage Park, which starts things off this month. Here’s a list of a few events in August that proves that even if Stampede is over, a lot of fun is still in store for the rest of the summer.

August 2
Heritage Day - Heritage Park
Witness the pageantry of the Strathcona Mounted Troop’s legendary Musical Ride.  20 Canadian Forces Soldiers, mounted on horseback will present Canada’s “living history” through this spectacular 35-minute performance. The Musical Ride represents a unique part of our national heritage, which is enjoyed by thousands of Canadians each year.

Indulge in a traditional Afternoon Tea in the elegant Wainwright Hotel Tea Room. There are two tea services on Heritage Day; at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m.  Guests will enjoy silver tea service and exquisite treats such as Heritage Park’s own freshly baked scones with Devonshire cream, dainty finger sandwiches, fresh fruit cocktail and an assortment of pastries and tarts.

The first 500 guests through the Park gates, before 10 a.m., with regular paid admission, will enjoy a complimentary pancake breakfast, served hot off the grill in Gunn’s Dairy Barn.

August 8
Marda Gras - Marda Loop
Attracting some 35,000 people, this New Orleans themed, family-friendly festival embraces the culture, cuisine and music of New Orleans for one full day along 33rd and 34th Avenues SW East of Crowchild Trail between 21st and 19th Streets SW. With its purple, green and gold pageantry,  Marda Gras Street Festival 2010 will feature the sights and sounds of New Orleans Jazz, Rhythm and Blues, street performances, Zydeco music and a variety of cultural performers.  The Festival will also play host to over 150 street vendors, entertainment stages, and feature areas including the Kids’ Quarter, a new Fashion Fairway and Arts and Culture area.
