Mad about Montana

The Montana’s refined lifestyle makes it a natural home for the Don Drapers of the world

Showtime’s hit series Mad Men shows the suave sophistication and genteel refinement of early 1960s America, and this world of pampered elegance is exactly the kind of lifestyle Montana offers.

“The Montana and the glamourous convenience it offers is the best kept secret in Calgary,” says sales manager Sherry Schluessel. “Its location right in the heart of Calgary’s thriving entertainment and dining scene makes life here all that more exciting and all that much easier.”

The 28-storey high-rise of stylish brick, stone and glass is located in the Connaught district, but may as well be in New York’s Central Park area, with its air of exclusive refinement. It has the ambiance of a Waldorf Astoria, brought home by its five-star luxury hotel–like grand lobby of rich wood panels and polished marble floors.

The comparisons don’t end there, as The Montana has an excellent concierge service — someone to greet residents and guests at the door, a personal ‘majordomo’ who can take care of all the residents’ needs.

“We take maintenance-free living seriously and that’s what the concierge service is there for, you never have to worry about missing your mail when you’re out of town, or making reservations for dinner, or taking care of the nitty-gritty of everyday life you personally don’t have time to attend to,” Schluessel adds.

Ken and Nancy Dicken moved into their 1,800-square-foot unit in The Montana about eight months ago, and they both agree that it was the best move they could have made.

“We decided to buy our condo at The Montana because of the great location and beautiful exterior. We can walk just about anywhere ... 17th Avenue, 4th Street restaurants, transit ... dentist, drycleaners, you name it,” Nancy tells Condo Living.

“Living in The Montana suits our lifetstyle because of all these reasons, and our ever efficient concierge.  The building is kept very clean and our maintenance staff keeps things perfect!” she adds.

It is this allure of easy-living elegance that accounts for the Montana’s success, as it is almost 75 per cent sold out. “All seven of our Estate homes around the $1.3 million range have sold within the last year, in spite of the slow economy, which means our success comes from having the right product for the right market.”

Adding further impetus to its claim is that the Montana’s developer, ProCura, have located their offices on the top floor, and its owners, Sherry and her husband, George, will be living in one of the Montana’s Estate suites as well. “It gives buyers the added sense of security that the building will be taken care of, as it will be our residence as well,” she says.

The Montana caters to a very specific clientele, Schluessel says, professionals who are at the top of their careers living fast-paced lives. “That’s why our location is key, because we are surrounded by some of the best restaurants in Calgary. You can just walk to a number of fine dining establishments and or pubs or lounges and still have time to relax at home.”

It is life at the very top as Montana’s expansive floor-to-ceiling windows offer some of the best panoramic views of the vibrant city under your feet. But what is really unique about them is that these four-pane Visionwall windows are almost triple the standard width of windows used in most multi-family homes.

“It lets you enjoy the views but doesn’t let noise through, nor will the temperature outside — whether in the extreme cold of winter or the heat of summer — affect the comfort of your room,” she says.

The nine inches of concrete that separates each floor and an eight-inch party wall with two independent wall components are further sound attenuation details that ensure a cocoon of silence for each of the 189 units in this poured-concrete high rise.

The units themselves are, without a doubt, the most lavishly elegant in town, with an innate sense of functionality about them. One-, two-, and three-bedroom plans are available ranging in size from 713 to 2,500 square-feet, although only a handful is left of the one-bedroom units. Each luxuriously appointed air-conditioned suite comes complete with high-end finishes, stainless steel appliances, modern fixtures and granite countertops.

Their new Empire show suite lets visitors peek into the kind of jet-set lifestyle available in one of the inner city’s most distinctive high-rise condominiums.

The approximately 1,400 square-foot, two-bedroom, two-bath Empire just embodies the kind of lavish lifestyle one can experience in the Montana — which you can think of as its own community of luxury million-dollar homes. But surprisingly, The Empire starts at only $765,000 plus GST.

Their $2-million top-of-the-line Nellie suites are also available. But regardless of which suite you choose “you get everything that The Montana is all about, a lap-of-luxury lifestyle that you can enjoy, a comfortably sized home where you can have an intimate date night but still have lots of room to entertain guests,” Schluessel says.

“Our vision is to add to the neighbourhood’s vibrancy. The Beltline has a unique heritage feel to it — and the historic Nellie McClung House is part of our development. And it is this image of a simpler time that we hope to capture and enhance with the Montana.”
