A great idea never loses its appeal, and The Edge undoubtedly is a very cool idea. The eye-catching industrial flair and purposeful design of this remarkable multi-family complex in Airdrie was not lost on Streetside Development, which promises to bring the project’s distinct ‘edge’ to its full potential.

The Edge had been a victim of the recent economic downturn and its previous developer could only finish the first part of the two-building complex. Streetside recognized the opportunity that this presented and stepped in to bring its own brand of stylish finesse - backed by its strong finances and an experienced team - to complete the project.

The fact that the first building sold out despite the turbulent economic times is testament to the overall appeal of The Edge, says Lisa Feist, operations manager at Streetside.

Located on a strategic site along East Lake Boulevard, The Edge forms the demarcation line separating Airdrie’s industrial area and the city’s extensive parks and pathways system. It’s also right next door to the multi-million dollar Genesis Place recreation centre.

“It’s one of the best locations in Airdrie, you have wide green space at your backyard that will likely never be obstructed, Genesis Place is just across the parking lot, and it remains quite accessible to the major thoroughfares so going in and out of the community is no problem,” she adds.

Streetside so loved the look of The Edge’s distinctive exterior that they are retaining the original architects of the project, Casola and Koppe Architects, to build the second building, which will have 119 units. “The look complements the surroundings and presents Airdrie’s modern, urban side,” she says.

They are tweaking the interior design of the units, however, giving a complete makeover for the kitchen to heighten its functionality, putting in lots more counter space that adds to the workspace of the busy chef as well as the entertainment factor that every kitchen needs.

“We are totally renovating the old show suite to reflect the new designs we’ve come up with, which are quite reflective of Streetside’s tastes for more modern, functional layouts,” Feist says.

There will be 20 total floor plans for their one- and two-bedroom units that start from 582 to 981square-feet, respectively. Practicality is a key aspect in the design that leaves a lot of storage room. “Depending on the floor plan, there will be an in-suite storage room as we realize this is something everyone cannot have enough of, you can get a spacious six-by-six-foot storage space, a den or workspace, or a larger laundry room,” she adds.

That’s besides the storage locker you get in the underground parking. Speaking of parking, owners have the option for tandem parking as well and there are tons of surface parking spaces for visitors, too.

It has a further ‘edge’ in that the parkade for the second building is already complete and they will be able to start construction soon. “First possessions can be as early as 10 months as we have a good head start in the construction process,” she says.

Prices start at an exceedingly affordable $155,000. The Edge is attracting a lot of single professionals and young couples. “Our designs really appeal to a wide sector of the market, plus because of our location near Airdrie’s industrial area, we get a lot of interest from people who want to eliminate long commutes to work. We’re five minutes from Cross Iron Mills in Balzac which is another big draw.”

Residents don’t have to bear with high condo fees because they don’t have to maintain lavish in-house amenities like gyms, because The Edge is already beneficially located next to Genesis Place, the best fitness centre in town,” she points out.

The Edge is the first development in Airdrie by Streetside Development, the Calgary-based developer that has built a name creating some of the most contemporary multi-family projects in southern Alberta.

The Edge is a four-storey condominium community that will have a total of 190 units in the two buildings when complete. It lies adjacent to East Lake and East Lake Park, which has also created a peaceful environment for residents, and one that encourages an active lifestyle.
