Buzz builds for The Edge

Excitement grows as The Edge’s new presentation centre opens

Airdrie is abuzz with the much anticipated opening of the latest show suite for one of the city’s most innovative multi-family developments: The Edge.

The new, reconfigured presentation centre completely renovated one of the existing suites from the development’s first building, and will feature a fine-tuned design that increases the functionality and cool factor of the home, says Streetside Development’s Mandy Adams.

“We are tweaking the interior design of the units, giving a complete makeover for the kitchen to heighten its functionality, putting in more counter space that adds to the workspace of the busy chef as well as the entertainment factor that every kitchen needs,” she says.

“We are completely renovating the show suite to reflect the new designs we’ve come up with, which are quite reflective of Streetside’s tastes for more modern, functional layouts,” Adams adds.

Streetside has injected new life in The Edge, its previous developer had been a victim of the economic downturn and the development had lain idle after the first building was completed a few years back.

But the Calgary-based Streetside quickly recognized The Edge’s enduring appeal and its terrific location along Airdrie’s East Lake Boulevard, right next door to the multi-million dollar Genesis Place recreation centre and wide, appealing swaths of parkland in the back.

“We knew we were lucky to be involved in this project with its great location, but we’re bringing our own unique sense of stylish finesse to The Edge, and building on an already great idea that we think would fulfill its full potential,” says Streetside operations manager, Lisa Feist.

The fact that the first building sold out despite the turbulent economic times is testament to the overall appeal of The Edge, she adds. “And as the foundation and parkade for the second building are already in place, it gives us an added leg up and can offer homes in this second building at a very affordable rate.”

The Edge’s biggest advantage remains to be its very appealing location on East Lake Boulevard, right on the border separating Airdrie’s industrial area and the city’s extensive parks and pathways system. 

“It’s one of the best locations in Airdrie, you have wide green space at your backyard that will likely never be obstructed, Genesis Place is just across the parking lot, and it remains quite accessible to the major thoroughfares so going in and out of the community is no problem,” Feist adds.

“It’s a location that those working in Airdrie’s industrial area will find very appealing as it is just down the street, as do employees at the Calgary International Airport and even the Cross Iron Mills mall which are just a straight drive down Highway 2.”

Streetside so loved the look of The Edge’s distinctive exterior that they are retaining the original architects of the project, Casola and Koppe Architects, to build the second building, which will have 119 units. “The look complements the surroundings and presents Airdrie’s modern, urban side,” she says.

There will be 20 total floor plans for their one- and two-bedroom units that start from 582 to 982 square-feet, respectively. Practicality is a key aspect in the design that leaves a lot of storage room. “Depending on the floor plan, there will be an in-suite storage room as we realize this is something everyone cannot have enough of, you can get a spacious six-by-six-foot storage space, a den or workspace, or a larger laundry room,” she adds.

That’s besides the storage locker you get in the underground parking. Speaking of parking, owners have the option for tandem parking as well and there are tons of surface parking spaces for visitors, too.

“First possessions can be as early as 10 months as we have a good head start in the construction process,” Feist says.

Prices start at an exceedingly affordable $155,000. The Edge is attracting a lot of single professionals and young couples. “Our designs really appeal to a wide sector of the market,” Adams says.

Residents don’t have to bear with high condo fees because they don’t have to maintain lavish in-house amenities like gyms, because The Edge is already beneficially located next to Genesis Place, the best fitness centre in town,” she points out.

The Edge is the first development in Airdrie by Streetside Development, the Calgary-based developer that has built a name creating some of the most contemporary multi-family projects in southern Alberta. 

The Edge is a four-storey condominium community that will have a total of 119 units in the two buildings when complete. It lies adjacent to East Lake and East Lake Athletic Park, which has also created a peaceful environment for residents, and one that encourages an active lifestyle.
