Hitting the right note

Keynote’s convenience is key for young couple

Rafael Lopez knew he was on to a good thing and was determined not to miss out on the opportunity; so when Keynote announced the launch of sales for the first tower of this unique urban village in 2006 he and his then girlfriend, Shirley, camped out overnight in front of the sales office to be among the first to buy a place for themselves in what promised to be an aria among the city’s multi-family developments.

Now, nearly two years later after moving in, Rafael says that promise has already been fulfilled, as Keynote turned out to be everything they hoped it would be. It has afforded them the luxury and convenience that fits their young, active lifestyle, and with the couple engaged to be married in September, their home on the 12th floor provides a great starting point for the rest of their lives.

“It’s everything we hoped it would be — it’s the perfect location for our lifestyle with everything from groceries, to recreational facilities and pathways and all kinds of cafes and restaurants just five minutes from the front door,” Rafael tells Condo Living.

“I’m a regular at Starbucks which is just downstairs, I do cook but I find that I don’t have to as there’s a wide selection of places to eat at in the area, and the Sunterra Market is an elevator ride away if I needed to whip up something quick,” he adds.

Rafael — Raf to his friends — works at an oil and gas firm in the downtown and work is just a quick walk away. “The Plus 15 walkway is a great convenience, I can be at my desk in no time,” he says. Raf is also an Ironman tri-athlete and he says the active lifestyle so accessible from Keynote allows him to stay in shape for these endurance races.

“I can walk to the Talisman Centre for a quick swim or just jog through the fantastic river pathway system that many Calgarians aren’t even aware of, all of it is very accessible from Keynote. The condo even has its own in-house fitness facility.”

Shirley and Raf, both still in their 20s, were born and raised in Calgary, and they met in high school at the nearby St. Mary’s in Mission. “I’ve practically lived my whole life within five minutes of this neighbourhood, and I’m really happy with the way it has progressed and we’re really excited about all the plans for the further development of the area, including East Village and the planned renovation of the Stampede grounds,” Raf says.

The 640-square-foot one-bedroom, one-bath suite has a very modern feel that suits their lifestyle, an open-concept design that’s great for entertaining, cork flooring that’s at once stylish and elegant and also serves to damp down sound transfer. “It’s a really quiet apartment, we’ve never had any issue with noise,” Shirley says.

Granite counter tops, dark brown cabinetry and a modern lighting package give the room a polished look. “We hardly did any upgrades, the standard specifications were really more than what we need,” Raf says.

But it’s the jaw-dropping view that’s the real attraction, and the floor-to-ceiling windows that stretch from the living room to their bedroom is by itself worth the price of admission. “You can see for miles, from the cityscape to the mountains, we have the best seats for the Stampede fireworks,” Raf adds.

The two aren’t planning to move anytime soon, but as their new marketing company called Redlime Marketing keeps growing, Shirley feels they may look at getting a two-bedroom unit in Keynote’s second residential tower that is just starting construction. “We may need a bigger home office. But I don’t think we’ll let go of this unit though, it’s just too good…maybe we’ll rent it out, but right now we’re just enjoying the life we have here,” she says.

Keynote will be composed of two residential towers and a 14-storey office tower, with retail space in the first two floors of each building. An abundance of heated underground parking is provided, and each building will have access to an outdoor garden via the Plus-15, allowing both condo residents and office tower workers a chance to enjoy a breath of fresh air. 

“They have an industrial-sized barbecue on there and it’s a great place to have friends over,” Shirley adds.

Keynote is best described as a ‘stylized urban village.’ It is designed to be the perfect multi-use venue – convenient for work, play, or just relaxing. In addition to the shared garden and on-site shopping and services, it includes a fitness facility and guest suites. In addition to the Plus-15 feature, practical driving lanes between the three buildings will provide ease of access and drop off. 

“We were really lucky to get in when we did with pre-construction prices, this was definitely a great deal,” Raf says.
