Good NEWS travels fast
Olympic host quarters-turned chic condos entering penultimate phase
NEWS from Broadcast Hill is making a buzz about town. The project, a combined effort from WestCreek Developments and Today’s Communities, describes itself as an “exciting new community of condominiums designed for homebuyers that ‘want it all ... near it all ... away from it all.’ ”
Located in the southwest at Bow and Sarcee Trails, the development has reinvented a landmark site with a fresh, funky feel. Broadcast Hill draws its name from its former function as lodgings for dignitaries, athletes and international media crews covering the 1988 Olympic Winter Games—well timed, considering the great event celebrates its 20th Anniversary. To add to the newsy theme, the CTV towers currently reside above the property.
NEWS interiors have been completely redone, the ideal complement to a full makeover of the pods’ exteriors. Broadcast Hill consists of 15 buildings and is currently in its second-last phase. Presently there are 17 suites of various descriptions available, although 15 more will be on board shortly, assures Judy Johnson, the project’s sales manager.
Suites range from $294,900 for a 587-square-foot single bedroom, to $337,900 for a 1,091-square-foot, two-bedroom, two-bathroom pad. Both bungalow and double-storey condos are available. With seven selections of floor plan, there is a plethora of choice within each building.
The simplest, single-bedroom plan makes great use of its space, providing a living and dining area, comfortably-sized kitchen, full bathroom and sizable bedroom. Single-storey, double-bedroom units bring ample extra square footage, when adding the extra bedroom, another half-bath and, in some instances, a walk-in closet in the main suite. The double-storey condos have a luxury penthouse feel. They are spacious, airy and angular, with vaulted ceilings in the living areas and a dramatic staircase.
All of the units are east facing, and most feature fantastic views of the city. The developers have made the most of this by incorporating large windows in every room, some of them floor-to-ceiling. “(It) really creates the illusion that the suites are larger than they are,” says Johnson. In addition, all suites have either a patio or balcony, depending on their location within each building. The double-storey units have both.
The finishing on the suites is preselected, both standard and upgrade, from three schemes. “The upside of this is that there’s immediate occupancy if needed,” says Johnson. The palettes, aptly named Tribune, Journal and Gazette, are variations of a bold, modern look. The finishing incorporates maple shaker cabinets, granite countertops and cork flooring. Each suite comes with both a wood-burning fireplace and a ceiling fan in the living area, plus Frigidaire appliances in either stainless steel or black.
“Location is everything,” says Johnson. Broadcast Hill prides itself on its “easy access to work—and play.”
Not only is the development situated a stone’s throw from downtown, but it’s also located near major arteries if you wanted to slip away into the mountain for some skiing or hiking. “It’s very accessible,” Johnson confirms. Shopping is only minutes away, with places like Strathcona Square and Westhills shopping centre in the immediate vicinity. Public transport has stops right at the project.
One of the major selling points of the development is a central amenities centre. The area contains a heated lap pool, a hot tub and gym, and just outside is a tennis court. A conjoined space, currently acting as the project’s sales centre, will eventually become a party room available for rent. The space features fireplaces, a full kitchen and wet bar.
Other NEWS-worthy attributes are heated underground parking, with plenty of guest parking available both at the front and backs of the buildings. Each suite also has a separate storage room, a secure five-foot by seven-foot space on the main level of the building. “One of the best features about the site islots of green space,” says Johnson, pointing out all the space between buildings, as well as picnicking and park sites and a waterfall feature.
The Surrounding NEWS sales centre is open Monday through Thursday from 1 to 7 p.m. and weekends and holidays noon to 5 p.m., and is located at 400 Village Gardens S.W.
