Welcome to the New Year, folks!
Holidays may be over, but we’re not about to take a breather. In fact, the New Year is already off to a blazing start. With the economy seemingly back on the right track, and condo sales going strong, there is a sense of optimism and opportunity in the Calgary market, which is a perfect fit for this issue that is devoted to health and wellness.
Our feature article on winter running examines a sport that some – including myself — think of as extreme. But we see that avid runners believe it’s the best way to stay fit in the cold months, not to mention a great cure for cabin fever. Old Man Winter has his work cut out for him if he intends to keep these hardy folk indoors. Our Focus On and Gadgets sections also showcase the gear and apparel needed to keep runners looking cool and feeling hot, while L. Sara Bysterveld delves into the ‘greenness’ of keeping fit.
We also check out how Calgary celebrates the hallowed Scottish tradition of the Burns Supper. Held every year on or near January 25 — the birthday of Scotland’s national poet, Robert Burns — it is equivalent to what Saint
Patrick’s Day means to the Irish. But the Burns Supper has a unique meaning to Calgarians, as the city owes much of what it has become to the pioneering efforts of Scottish immigrants.
The New Year brings a fresh optimism that is reflected at Cove Properties’ Monarch multi-family project in McKenzie Towne, which has seen healthy sales since it began its pre-sales push last month. Cove’s John Sparrow says there is a new wave of confidence in the market and a lot of pent-up demand that is benefiting the Monarch and the entire industry.
We also check out Karoleena Homes’ latest ‘green’ triumph, The Graycie, in South Calgary. Designed with an edgy, modern style, the Graycie does come with all the bells and whistles — including full home automation systems — but what sets it apart is its total commitment to sustainability.
In our cover feature, guest writer Kelly Stewart chats with Brian O’Sullivan to find out just how glitzy life can be at The Savoy condo.
Stay tuned next month and feel the love as our annual Valentine issue tackles the topic of romance.
