Spring wishing

Thinking of spring in the middle of February might prove a futile pursuit. As I write this, the temperature outside is hovering just under the minus-20 degree Celsius mark and there isn’t even the slightest hint of blossoming greenery around. But all this should change February 24 as the Calgary Home + Garden Show always brings a sense of warmth to the city — or at least, the promise that warmer times are just around the corner.

The annual spring home show comes a bit early this year, but it remains the premier event of the season, heralding the coming design trends for 2011. We talk about the much-anticipated event in our Feature section and talk to a number of special guests slated for this year’s show, including Jackie Morra of Home Décor Solutions. Aly Velji — our in-house design expert and a regular at the show — also gives us a preview of design trends for the home we can expect this year. Yellow it seems is the colour for 2011, he says.

We also feature three upcoming multi-family projects that can make us feel that spring is just around the corner, all are in their initial stages, and all promise to bring the condo lifestyle closest to the ideal. First is IndigoSky by the Carlisle Group, this month’s cover story is a continuation of the developer’s vision to create the ultimate multi-family project, which has met with considerable success in Edmonton and which they are confident they can repeat here. Victoria Cross by Avi Urban is a luxury townhome project in the red-hot Currie Barracks inner city area that matches the heritage status of this neighbourhood with elegance and verve. While McPherson Place in Bridgeland introduces the brilliant concept of joint homeownership that would allow prospective buyers to invest in a home without having to pony-up a down payment up front.

This month, we also feature ‘green’ design trends and what we can look forward to in creating a healthy lifestyle without making too much of an environmental footprint. Our community profile showcases the north-central community of Sage Hill that is fast becoming a favourite for young families.

In a first of sorts, we also feature our first vacation condo owner in our Lifestyles feature, as we talk to Remy Leung and see through his eyes the beauty of Canmore and its resort-town allure.
