The condo comeback

Spring seems to be in full swing, but it isn’t only the warmer climes that seem to have the city a-buzz. The rising number of starts in multi-family construction is welcome news for the industry that has been knocked around by the recession over the past two years. Just take a peek at our Around Town column at the back of the magazine and see how many developers are opening new show suites and new products here.

The resurgence is illustrated by our coverage of new condos this issue, which sees some of British Columbia’s most prominent developers making their way back to Calgary with fresh projects.

This includes Grosvenor Americas — the makers of Drake, our cover feature. There’s also Bucci’s NEXT in Bridgeland and Stonecroft’s Copperfield townhomes in the southeast. All are B.C. - based developers and all agree that Calgary has recovered from the recession and that further growth is guaranteed. Drake’s Jaydan Tait says the youthful energy of Calgary is a big factor in their decision to push through with their new development off 17th Avenue S.W. Mike Bucci says NEXT draws from the family-run company’s long history in Bridgeland while remaining optimistic about the city’s future. Bob Carmichael of Stonecroft says their latest undertaking, in Copperfield, makes a statement about Calgary’s core strengths and its affordability will be a key factor in its success. Calgary’s own Tricor Developments says the resurgence is well underway as it is all but sold out of its ultra-luxury townhome units in The Mission Crossing as success in that niche market always seem to foretell an upswing.

The green of spring also brings out the “green” in us, as we put a spotlight on all things sustainable — from eco-friendly furniture in Don Molyneaux’s Focus On photo feature, to “green” pet care in L. Sara Byterveld’s Going Green column. I also bring an update on multi-family recycling in the city as well as a sidebar on what to do with hazardous household waste. Design guru, Alykhan Velji, brings his critical eye on the art of up-cycling and how to bring back to life a discarded piece of furniture. The 2010 SAM Awards finalists is also listed in these pages, so look for how your favourite builder and developer did this year.

Let’s also welcome Courtney Allen to Condo Living as one of our newest contributors with her first feature in our Condo Lifestyle section; expect to hear more from her in the future.

So, as we leave winter behind, there’s more to look forward to than just great weather!
