The spring in our step

May is the month of renewal, when we finally put the winter far behind us, but check the rearview mirror now and again just to be sure. Nothing represents this joyous month more than gardening, tilling the soil, getting the thumb green. It is an activity anyone can take part in — yes, even those in townhomes and condos! We dig deeper into the subject with Patricia Johnson, who opens the door to a “greener” way to garden. She says just because your garden looks green it doesn’t mean it’s healthy for the environment. She gives us handy tips on what to do and what to use for our own perfect, earth-friendly Eden.

And what better way to enjoy the bounty of nature in your backyard (or patio, or deck) than to kick back in your own outdoor living room, which I discuss at length in my Shopping feature on patio paraphernalia — from barbecues, to today’s lawn furniture, to modern awnings and windscreens. We talk about what maximizes enjoyment of your private outdoor space.

The bloom of spring extends to our line-up of featured condo developments this issue, all of which are enjoying a surge in spring sales. Heading the list is our cover feature: Panorama West by Cardel Lifestyles — the perfect combination of Calgary’s top condo builder and its most popular neighbourhood, Panorama Hills. It is opening four new show suites this month, so be sure to check them out. The balanced lifestyle of ZEN by Avalon Master Builders comes to McKenzie Towne, this time with the added assurance of green quality home with the Mike Holmes stamp of approval. Brad Remington Homes also makes its mark in the southeast with its Copperfield Park development that is enjoying healthy traffic to its on-site sales centre in the popular neighbourhood. Assured Developments turns life into art with its latest offering, Galleries Renfrew, that merges a terrific inner city location with luxury finishes.

Our superstar in-house design specialist, Aly Velji, also gives us a behind-the-scenes look at the hit reality show My RONA Home, where he is undertaking design duties for the Blue Team. He tells me to urge readers to “Vote Blue.” Speaking of voting, the results are in for this year’s SAM Awards, see who the ‘best of the best’ are in this issue.

The spring in our step is not just because of the great weather (I hope), it’s the anxiousness to get outdoors and do some gardening, barbecuing, or just show home shopping.
