Artful living

Express yourself through art – that was what my old art appreciation professor always told her class. Sadly, my artistic skills are about as pedestrian as can be (though I can draw a decent Batman). Appreciating art, however, doesn’t take any skill — and thank goodness for the abundance of art galleries in the city where you can just soak in a myriad of works of talented artists from Calgary and beyond and even buy an original piece that strikes your fancy.

This is the topic of this month’s shopping feature: bringing home art to liven up the living room. Mind you, it’s not just any “art” that you find in the big box stores that we talk about. Rick Anderson at Artevo tells me that true art is unique — one that came from the artists soul and speaks to yours — and you can’t get this from mass produced stuff. We also discuss some imaginative ways you can display your art collection that can further enliven your wall.

June’s abloom with all the new multi-family show suites that have opened up (just check out a small selection in this issue’s Around Town column). There are many more in the pipeline, including this month’s cover feature: St. John’s Tenth St. by Streetside Developments. It is the first new multi-family development in Kensington in quite some time, which explains the long line of interested buyers that have signed up already barely a month after pre-sales were launched. york29 by Trico Homes in the popular community of New Brighton is another up-and-coming townhome development which benefits from its extremely strategic location and affordable pricing.

Also in this month is Boulevard Townes by Birchwood Properties that brings a new level of luxury living in Quarry Park. While Ovation by Inter-Gulf Cidex offers terrific new prices to go along with its outstanding views of the city and beyond as this final building of the triumvirate of towers at WestGate Park continues to wow.

We also get the second half of our My RONA Home coverage, as we talk to Alana Humphreys — the designer of the Yellow Team — to bring us on a behind-the-scene tour of this hit CityTV reality show. She says “Vote Yellow.”
