If I had a million dollars...

The Barenaked Ladies might be out of luck as a million dollars might not be enough to buy some of the multi-million-dollar condos we feature this issue. Besides, the band’s song is all about modesty, and there’s really nothing modest about these heavenly homes.

All the hallmarks of an international jet-setting city that Calgary has become are reflected in the snazzy penthouse suites we picked for the feature (and there are a ton more out there), and Sotheby’s International Canada’s Julie Dempsey says there remains a big demand for these opulent abodes in town. From the spectacular views to the dazzling finishes, these condos are some of the best Calgary has to offer, and makes me wish for a million dollars — you know, as a downpayment.

From the up-scale to the affordable, we also feature the booming community of Copperfield that has become a hotspot for multi-family living with a brace of townhome and apartment style developments (sometimes a combination of both). Hopewell Residential Communities’ family-friendly southeast neighbourhood certainly provides the perfect suburban environment to encourage such growth.

They may not be in the million-dollar range but the value is certainly there in this month’s crop of condo features. We start out in the Red, Streetside’s Red Haus, that is. This distinctive development in the northwest community of Royal Oak — with its red tile roof that can be seen from miles around — is going on its third building and may just be the last chance to own a new home in this popular neighbourhood. We also look at the European-inspired lifestyle offered by Casel from Niklas Group, as this mixed-use building in Uptown 17th location has become a focal point of life in the area with its Casel Marche market and bistro. Mosaic Mirage by Brookfield Homes completes the renowned builder and land developer’s vision for McKenzie Towne, as this will be the final multi-family development in this master-planned community. Groves of Varsity from Statesman may very well be the hottest “secret” out there as it is off to a fantastic start selling nearly half of the first building in this planned five-building mixed-use complex even with very little marketing effort, which their sales team attributes to the location and value they offer.

As I write this, we are right in the middle of Stampede season, and everyone seems to be enjoying themselves in the revelries. There is renewed energy likewise in the local new condo market, which we hope to bring to you through our coverage.
