Festive February

No one likes February. The weather can be bitterly cold, days are still short, and it’s usually the month when the bills come in from the (financial and dietary) excesses of the holidays. There is Valentine’s Day for the romantically inclined, but what I’m more excited for is the Calgary Home + Garden Show; if not for anything else than it gives us a little glimmer of hope for the spring to come.

This year’s edition of Calgary’s biggest home show promises to be the hottest one yet, with popular HGTV home renovation host Bryan Baeumler bringing his star power to the proceedings. He tells me in my chat with him for this issue’s show feature that Calgary is one of his favourite stops and that the warmth of his reception here keeps him coming back for more despite his busy (and getting busier) schedule. Bryan isn’t the only celebrity we’re looking forward to see at the show, there’s the celebrated design duo of Alykhan Velji and Rosalyn Lazaruk, who will talk about organizing your garden shed and answer design questions from the audience as well. Besides, with 650-plus exhibitors, there’s always something new and informative to see at the show. Including our very own Source Media Group booth. Drop by and say ‘Hello’.

We’re generating our own heat in the magazine this month as we feature the master bedroom. Jessica Patterson spills the secrets of creating an environment of calm solitude in your master bedroom in this month’s On Trend piece. There’s a little bit of controversy as well in the News section I wrote about the City’s new growth rules that some in the industry are worried might stymie growth.

Stars of this issue remain to be the line up of new condo projects that we spotlight, starting with the cover feature on FIRST, FRAM + Slokker’s sleek mixed-use multi-family contribution to the rebirth of East Village that boasts a highrise concrete tower and a low-rise podium at its base to attract the widest range of buyers possible. Chalet No 4 by Sabal continues to chart its course for success in Copperfield with its latest ittireation of their award-wining townhomes. NEXT by Bucci in Bridgeland has turned heads with their spectacular success and only a third of their 132 units are left. The Guardian is another high-rise that’s making history in Victoria Park and will be the tallest residential structure in Calgary at 42 storeys.

With 2011 firmly behind us, we here at Condo Living continue to look with optimism at the year head of us and the tidings they may bring to the rejuvenated condo market. Now if only spring can come a little faster…
