Spring fever

The collection of shoes in the front entries of condo show suites these days say it all: Calgary’s housing market is back in the swing of things. Several new developments have enjoyed spectacular launches, and all the condos featured in this month’s condo profiles have reported significant traffic through their various show suites and sales centres.

Our cover feature, The Edge by Streetside Developments exemplifies this exuberant mood. This development in Airdrie had stalled during the depths of the economic crisis, but has now regained its footing and is launching it’s much anticipated second building with the renowned Calgary-based developer now at the helm. TheRIVER luxury condos just broke Calgary’s sales record for the most expensive condo in the city at $8.3 million and it’s not even the most expensive. While Trico Home’s york29 in New Brighton is also enjoying healthy sales, and new infrastructure developments going on in its vicinity will be a further boost to its appeal. PIXEL by Battistella has very much benefited from its transit-oriented-development designation in Kensington and is drawing from pent up demand for new homes in this spectacular inner city location.

Speaking of inner city locations, we also get to talk about the historic community of Bridgeland and see the latest developments here and its continued relevance to the city.

We spotlight the downsizing trend in this issue, we talk to some of the leading builders and developers to get their in-sight on the impact the greying of Canada will have on housing in Calgary. For the most part, they say we’re all right as the market now does offer a wide variety of downsizing options. Jessica Patterson also gets in the act with her On Trend feature on designing for the downsizer — the dos and don’ts of scaling back. My shopping feature looks into cabinet organizers and finding the right professional to help you “right-size” your life. Our Focus On feature on decorative boxes shows another option to make the downsizers life easier.

Spring also marks the SAM Awards season, the local industry’s equivalent to Hollywood’s Oscar night, and you can check out the partial list of this year’s nominees in these pages too.

Winter seems to have taken it easy on us this year (knock on wood and I hope I didn’t just jinx it), but whatever the weather, you can trust that Condo Living will bring you the latest news of what’s going on in the industry.
