Joyous July

The Summer of 2012 may not have the same catchy ring as “The Summer of ‘69” but the same jaunty optimism embodied in that Bryan Adams Top 10 hit is felt this summer in the Calgary condo market.

Everyone I talk to; from new condo developments in the downtown, East Village, the inner city to the suburbs, say there is a sense of building excitement these days.

Vogue — the newest downtown high-rise tower by La Caille Group and our cover story this month — has enjoyed a very successful launch, selling 70 of the 210 units in the 34-storey building in the first few days of its opening. Streetside is enjoying a healthy run for their Evanston Square townhomes but expect another surge for their low-density apartment building component that has just begun construction. The Landings at Cougar Ridge by Statesman is likewise busy, pulling in buyers from across generations who are attracted by the fantastic views at its location just off Old Banff Coach Road. Speaking of views, The Estates of Valley Ridge by Cove Properties has the best location for any avid golfer as its sits right by the 18th hole of the prestigious Valley Ridge golf course, with fantastic views of the pristine greens.

This month’s theme revolves around children and the home. We have Kathy McCormick bringing us the latest trends in kids’ beds and other furniture for this very personal side of the home, while Jessica Patterson talks about the need for multi-functional design for the children’s bedroom that will age with them as they grow up. We also take a fun look at playhouses in this month’s Focus On photo feature.

The community profile spotlight is on the inner city community of Mission and the kind of relaxed — and varied — lifestyle it offers. Marty Hope got to talk to the new CHBA — Calgary Region president Charron Ungar, a post that his father — Homes by Avi’s Avi Amir — once held. Our condo lifestyle feature on Barb and Jim Chapman brings us to the community of Kincora and the kind of life they now enjoy in their new Edenmore townhome.

As you can see, the magazine itself is starting to gain some heft, which can in itself be an indicator of the robust market. It’s in times like these that you want to go out there with the best information for choosing your home, we’d like to believe we’re helping in that regard.
