Warmer weather just lifts my spirits. I’m starting to enjoy my backyard again, I have my barbecue grill cleaned up and ready for the season, and the lawn is starting to call my attention, too. Not all of us get to enjoy a big backyard, especially apartment condo dwellers. But in this issue, you’ll find some developments that are meaning to fix that.

First we have our cover feature, Fish Creek Exchange. This new condo by Graywood Developments is about to start and its biggest draw seems to be its divine location on the edge of Fish Creek Park — one of Canada’s largest urban parks. How’s that for a backyard? Even if it seems a world away from the city, it’s still close to urban amenities, including major transportation corridors and shopping and entertainment hubs. Sales are starting soon and you can bet this won’t be the last time you’ll hear about it from us.

We have a terrific mix of condo developments included in our profiles this issue — from suburban affordability and inner-city chic. We start with Jayman BUILT’s Westman Village in Mahogany and their Calligraphy condo apartments that is taking multi-family living to new heights. There is also Champagne in Quarry Park, which is down to its final few units, including two spectacular penthouses that personify the meaning of luxurious living.

On the smartly stylish suburban condos, we have Towns of Redstone by StreetSide Developments that boast of no condo fees, and also The Mark 101 from Nuovo by Shane Homes that relies on the developer’s profound home building knowledge to come up with apartment condos with all the sensibility of a single-family home. Then, there’s the hit Verve in East Village that has the wonderful riverside community and all it has to offer as its backyard, including St. Patrick’s Island Park, Studio Bell and the soon to open new Central Library.

Legacy, the winner of SAM Community of the Year in back-to-back years is also featured in this issue and they have come up with something new for those who don’t have a backyard. WestCreek Developments — Legacy’s developer — is opening a community garden where residents can work out their green thumbs in the company of neighbours. It’s one of the ways Legacy encourages the bonds of community.

Also in this issue are design tips on how to make the most of your micro-suite — be that a townhome or apartment condo — we all can use some advice on getting our groove on in this smaller living spaces, and David Crosson has some really interesting tips in his STYLE column. Speaking of backyards, nothing completes the scene more than just an awesome barbecue grill and Aaliya Essa picked out some of the best new models in her Focus On section. Enjoying the weather can also mean heading out to Calgary’s backyard of Banff and Canmore, let Shelley Boettcher be your guide to this adventure as she tells you where you can spend the day here.

Backyards are awesome, and even if you’re in a lock-and-leave condo there’s no reason why you can’t enjoy Calgary’s nature-filled backyard.
