Art to imitate life at Xenex

Shelley Williamson

What a difference ten buildings make. That’s how many multi-family residential Bucci Developments buildings have contributed to the Calgary landscape in the past eight years.

And how better to celebrate the landmark than to erect a one-of-a-kind monument, while supporting local art, in front of its Xenex building.

The challenge of creating public art to flank the future entry to Xenex on 12th was extended to the art community a few months back, with potential entrants urged to sculpt a piece reflecting Calgary and the building, itself. A dozen people submitted their entries and three finalists were chosen.

Mike Bucci, from Bucci Developments announced the winner July 24th. “It was close. It was tight. It was intense,” said Bucci, following the judging just minutes before, adding the Vancouver-based developer is “very excited” about the future landmark that will usher in visitors and residents at Xenex.

The tough contest between local sculptors Tony Bloom, Lori Sobkowich and Al Henderson was won in the end by native Calgarian Henderson’s unique interpretation of Calgary life—Ten Figures in Motion With a Horse. Henderson will not only have his bronze art—which features ten people swept up in a whirlwind along with a horse—showcased in front the 18-storey high-rise, a $50,000 commission to complete the sculpture is also part of the honour.

“The sculptors’ job, the three of us, was to give the judges the most difficult job we could,” mused Henderson. “Calgary is figures in motion … this project (Xenex) is like putting a small town in the community, and these are people from the community caught up in it.”

Kim Dashwood of Dashwood Consulting, who oversaw the contest as art administrator, lauded Bucci’s efforts to embrace local art. “Public art really differentiates a city and I think this is going to become an iconic piece in Calgary. For the developer to take that risk is such a rewarding thing to the project and to the community,” said Dashwood following the judging.

When complete in Fall 2008, Xenex on 12th will boast 150 suites spanning 500-plus square-feet to more than 2,000 square-feet in size. Nine different floor plans are available, including unique live/work units. Current prices range from $391,788 to $1,168,788.
